Chromium extension for downloads
Clean file names, before they hit your disk.
HushFile renames and sorts each download the moment it starts, using a template you set. Everything runs in your browser.
The Chrome Web Store listing is not live yet. The button will link to it once it is.
What it does
Three jobs, done quietly
Rename
HushFile turns download (3).mp4 into a name you can search for. It builds each name from the date, the site and the page title, and drops junk like (3), copy and long hex strings.
Sort
Files go into folders by type, such as Footage, Images or Documents. You can edit every folder name.
Undo
Every rename shows a notification with an Undo button, and the last 50 are kept in the popup. Undo downloads the original file again under its first name.
How it works
Three steps, all before the file is saved
A download starts
Chrome asks extensions to confirm the filename before writing the file.
HushFile proposes a name
It cleans the name, fills your template and picks a folder from your rules.
Chrome saves it
The file lands in the right place, and you get a notification with Undo.
Privacy first
It has nothing to send, so it sends nothing
No sign-in and no payment system.
No tracking of any kind. This site sets no cookies either.
No remote servers. Settings and history live in your browser.
No host permissions. It never reads page content.
What HushFile is not. It does not encrypt, hide, scan or password-protect files. It only handles filenames and folder locations.
Permissions
Four permissions, each with one job
downloads
Lets HushFile propose a name and folder for each download.
storage
Saves your settings and recent history on your device.
tabs
Reads the title of your active tab to build a better name.
notifications
Shows the rename notice and its Undo button.
Limitations
What to know before you rely on it
These are the known limits of version 1.1.0.
- Cleaning up names and folders normalizes unsafe input (stray
.., illegal characters, very long names) instead of rejecting it with an error. - The
{site}label is a small heuristic, not the Public Suffix List. Domains outside its short built-in list may give an unexpected label. - Undo downloads the original address again. It cannot promise the server returns identical bytes, and the link may have expired.
- Per-site style overrides beyond pause and resume are not fully exposed in the popup yet.
- The title in a filename comes from the active tab of the focused window, which may not be the page that started the download.
- Files with an extension that has no folder rule are renamed but stay in the main Downloads folder.
- No automated test suite ships yet.
FAQ
Common questions
Does HushFile encrypt, hide or scan my files?
No. It does not encrypt, hide, scan or password-protect anything. It never reads file contents. It only handles filenames and folder locations. The name is not a security claim.
Does it send my data anywhere?
No. HushFile has no remote servers, no analytics, no accounts and no payment system. Your settings and download history stay on your device. If Chrome Sync is on, Chrome can sync your settings between your own signed-in browsers. We never receive a copy.
Which browsers does it work in?
Chrome 110 or newer, and other Chromium browsers such as Edge and Brave. It is not available for Firefox or Safari yet.
What does HushFile read?
When a download starts it reads the filename, the address of the page that started it, and the title of your active tab. It has no host permissions. It never reads page content or injects scripts into sites.
Why did a file stay in my main Downloads folder?
Folders are chosen by file extension. If no rule matches the extension, the file is still renamed but is not moved into a folder. You can edit the rules on the settings page.
What happens if something goes wrong?
HushFile keeps the original name. If it takes longer than 1.2 seconds to answer Chrome, or hits any error, it steps aside. If a file with the new name already exists, Chrome adds a number instead of overwriting it.
